Claudia Jordan engaged to a dating show contestant?

Claudia Jordan engaged to a dating show contestant?

Ok, supposedly Claudia Jordan from RHOA and The Rickey Smiley Morning Show is engaged to Shawn Bullard whose matchmaking reality show, Match Made in Heaven has only aired one episode on WE. WEtv pitched this matchmaker show as the Bachelor show you always wanted.  I guess it really is because we already know he didn’t marry one of the girls.

I actually watched the show one night while the remote was too far away and I was too lazy to move. I don’t know how it’s going to last past this 1st season and now with already knowing the end, where does the mystery lie? If it is true, they should’ve done a better job of keeping this under wraps until the season ends. But…the ratings may increase because people will want to find out who this dude really is. I guess only time will tell.

Good luck Claudia. He does seem like a nice guy, he has his own money, and you both have athletic pasts. Get your man girl! Just keep your socks on! 😉

No, she didn’t…

No, she didn’t…

Just as I do every night, I prepare my daughter’s dinner, place it on her table and tell her to sit down and eat. Tonight, I placed her plate on her table and went upstairs to bump (meaning just knock the wrinkles out) my husband’s clothes for work since he was running late.

As I’m ironing, my daughter twirls in the room in her princess dress and heels that she’s had on since this morning looking for her daddy. I told her that he is getting ready for work and that she needed to go downstairs to eat her food. This little girl looked at me and started shaking her head no at me. And the words that followed had me saying, no she didn’t. This little girl puts on the “I’m so innocent” face and tells me no, it’s yucky. I was like, Excuse me little girl?

Now, she is going through this picky eating phase and it is driving me nuts. One day she loves broccoli and the next day she’s turning up her nose at it. On top of that, she is sooooo dramatic. She has a “moment” if she sees what she now doesn’t like on her plate. I hope this phase ends soon or one of us will have to leave. Lol. Kids. You gotta love ’em.

The Ultimate Chocolate High

The Ultimate Chocolate High

Did you know that for just $50, you can experience the greatest chocolate high of your life? Belgium chocolatier, Dominique Persoone was tasked with creating a dessert for a Rolling Stones party in 2007. He wanted to make sure this was the best rock n’ roll and chocolate experience of their lives.

Because he was intrigued by how the the sense of smell increased the pleasure of taste, he wanted to invent a device that incorporated both senses. Inspired by a propeling tobacco sniffer device created by his grandfather, Dominique created the Chocolate Shooter. That’s right folks! He created a device just so you can snort chocolate.

The device was a hit at the party and demand soon increased for the Chocolate Shooter. They come in either mint and ginger or mint and raspberry flavors. This is how he describes the experience in the Yahoo News story, “The mint and the ginger really tinkle your nose,” the 46-year-old said in his chocolate factory in the medieval city of Bruges. “Then the mint flavor goes down and the chocolate stays in your brain.”

Excuse me? This is the same description of a high an addict gives about snorting cocaine minus the flavors of course. This is crazy to me. It is simply not that serious. Snorting chocolate?! Really! There definitely has to be some market for it because 25,000 devices have been sold. I’m amazed. Check out the video below by the creator Dominique Persoone to see how it works.

Bio courtesy of arthurashe.org and biography.com

Arthur Ashe was a top ranked tennis player in the 1960s and 70s. Raised in the segregated South, he was the first African-American male tennis player to win a Grand Slam tournament. He was much more than an athlete though. His commitment to social justice, health and humanitarian issues left a mark on the world as indelible as his tennis was on the court.

Born on July 10, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia, Arthur Ashe became the first, and is still the only, African-American male player to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon. He is also the first black American to be ranked No. 1 in the world. Always an activist, when Ashe learned that he had contracted AIDS via a blood transfusion, he turned his efforts to raising awareness of the disease, before finally succumbing to it on February 6, 1993.

EMPIRE…I Hate You!

EMPIRE…I Hate You!

Ugh. I am so upset. I really wanted to not like this show.  From the very beginning, I thought this was a sequel to Hustle & Flow and that it would not hold my attention long. Well, they messed me up with the 1st 5 minutes of the pilot episode with that woman singing that soulful song and then with Cookie beating her youngest son with that broomstick.  Pretty funny stuff because I’ve known women to do that very thing to their unruly sons. During the pilot they introduced a bunch of characters, killed one, and threw in some great music, so I decided to give it another shot the following week. Plus, I found out that Timbaland was working on the music so I knew there would be some great tunes ahead. Since then, I have tuned in each week to this musical drama. It just sucks you in and Taraji P. Henson is playing her best role yet. You believe her character completely.

The episodes following the pilot showed us how the patriarch Lucious Lyons has been afflicted by an incurable disease, hates his gay son, wants his youngest son to be just like him, is a murderer, doesn’t really care about the eldest son who has his back at all cost, is dating a debutante, and has a chemistry with his ex-wife that is undeniable. You learn to dislike Lucious for his harshness and insensitivity to his son’s sexual orientation. Then, he murders the man who practically raised his boys while his wife was serving a prison sentence for his drug activity. On a side note, during the first episode Lucious had several different hair pieces going on. One moment it was wavy, then he had a box, and then a TWA. Too funny to me to see that lack of consistency. LOL. Anyway, he does have one redeeming moment when he fires a rapper who consistently disrespects his ex-wife. Then, all of that goes out the window when the youngest and middle son collaborate on a music project and he gives all the credit to the youngest one. He has several moments like that.

There are 3 sons at the middle of this family. The eldest son Andre is a business savvy, conniving, scheming, bipolar, power-hungry young man who seeks his father’s approval. We see flashbacks where he hid a gun in his legos just to prevent his dad from being arrested and then in the present time he provides an alibi for his father during a murder. Andre wants to run Empire as he spearheads the IPO sale of the company and is willing to crush his brothers in the process to do so. Jamal is the bane of his father’s existence. He’s gay and has a latin lover. His father constantly reminds him that being gay is his choice and he owns him. Even though Cookie has been gone for 17 years, there are flashbacks that reveal even as a young child she knew he was different and would have his back. Because of this bond, she is able to convince Jamal to pursue his music further. He eventually denounces his father’s riches and seeks after his own fortune making dope music with his mom as his manager. He is now in a race to be bigger than his youngest brother because he is definitely the most musically talented. He will be the one to watch for the most transformation.  Hakeem is the youngest of the boys and the most spoiled. His father dotes on him, tries to prime him to run the company and pushes him to be the best. He definitely has some mommy issues because he’s dating a woman old enough to be his mom and he calls her mama. Say what? He hates Cookie and doesn’t respect her. He has to somewhat get along with her because his younger girlfriend is being manage by his mom. Hakeem has talent, but has the big head. As it’s been said, pride cometh before the fall.

Cookie is the matriarch of this family. She is a bad mamma jamma. She walked out of prison with an agenda, The first place she goes is to see her middle son, Jamal. He welcomes her in. After getting her 21st century makeover she heads to see Lucious at Empire. She wants to make it known that she helped build the company with her $400k. There are several flashbacks that reveal how she was down for her dude and believed in his craft wholeheartedly. She feels betrayed and she wants to get even by showing Lucious that the son he rejected all these years is the artist he once was. She has hilarious run-ins with his new lady, who is so super annoying and arrogant. Anyway, Cookie has a lot of levels to her and we find out some of these levels as she meets with federal agents on a case, helps to increase the confidence of Jamal, orders a hit in error, and genuinely wants a relationship with all 3 of her sons.

I have to admit, it’s getting really good y’all. Jamal is now believing in himself and declared war on his brother with a punch to the gut. Hakeem is hotheaded and irrational especially when he finds out his girl is a lesbian. Andre is behind a lot of the confusion and I believe his bipolar disorder is manifesting into another condition which will cause him to eventually become completely unraveled. It’s messy, full of great supporting cast members, and the music will have you grooving in your seat. It looks like I’m in it for the long run. Who’s with me?

Augusta Savage

Biography courtesy of blackpast.org

African American sculptor, teacher, and advocate for black artists Augusta Savage was born Augusta Christine Fell in Green Cove Springs, Florida on February 29, 1892, the child of Edward Fells, a laborer and Methodist minister, and Cornelia Murphy. Her daughter, Irene Connie Moore, was born when Savage was 16, in the first of her three marriages. She retained the last name of her second husband, a carpenter named James Savage; they were divorced in the early 1920s.   After moving to Harlem in New York in 1921, Savage studied art at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art where she finished the four-year program in three years. She was recommended by Harlem librarian Sadie Peterson (later Delaney), for a commission of a bust of W.E.B. DuBois.  The sculpture was well received and she began sculpting busts of other African American leaders, including Marcus Garvey. Savage’s bust of a Harlem child, Gamin (1929), brought her fame as an artist, and a scholarship to study at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris.

In France, she associated with expatriates Henry Ossawa Tanner, Claude McKay, and Countee Cullen. Savage had first received a French scholarship in 1922 but the offer was rescinded when white Alabama students who had received similar grants refused to travel to France unless she was removed from the group.  Her unsuccessful appeal against that loss initiated her lifelong fight for civil rights and the recognition of black artists. Her challenge to the denial of her application was reported in both the black and white presses.   Savage exhibited in several galleries and had numerous commissions, among them for busts of James Weldon Johnson and W.C. Handy, after her return from Paris to Harlem. With a grant from the Carnegie Foundation, she founded in 1932 the Savage School of Arts, which was the largest program of free art classes in New York. Her students included painter Jacob Lawrence and psychologist Kenneth B. Clark. In 1934 Savage became the first African American woman elected to the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. She was president of the Harlem Artists Guild during the 1930s. Using her appointment in 1936 as an assistant supervisor in the Federal Arts Project (a division of the Works Progress Administration or WPA), she fought for commissions for black artists and to have African American history included on public murals. Savage was the first director of the Harlem Community Art Center, the most successful community center of the Federal Arts Project. After resigning from the WPA in 1939, she opened the Salon of Contemporary Negro Art in Harlem, which was America’s first gallery for the exhibition and sale of works by African American artists. Works exhibited included those by Beauford Delaney, James Lesesne Wells, Lois Mailou Jones, and Richmond Barthe.

The gallery was not financially successful, however, and was forced to close after several months. Although she was a leading artist of the Harlem Renaissance, low sales and a lack of financial resources dogged Savage’s career. Many of her works were done in plaster, and she was unable to raise the money to have them cast in more permanent materials, so not all have survived. Most notably, the 16-foot-tall 1937 sculpture The Harp, also known as Lift Every Voice and Sing, commissioned for and a popular display at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, was destroyed when the fair was over because she didn’t have the funds to have it removed from the fairgrounds and cast in a more permanent material. When the Schomburg Center had a retrospective of her work in 1988, only 19 pieces were located. Savage became reclusive in the early 1940s, and died of cancer on March 26, 1962, after spending her last year with her daughter in New York.
