Healthy Eating When You’re Sick

WebMD Feature

By Peter Jaret
Reviewed By Laura J. Martin, MD

Eating healthy meals isn’t easy when you don’t feel well, especially if you have a serious or chronic illness. You may be too tired to prepare food for yourself. Medicines may make food taste strange or unpleasant. Mouth sores or swallowing problems can make eating difficult. Or nausea, which is a common symptom and a common side effect of some medications, may make food the last thing you want to think about.

“Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do, even when you’re not feeling well, to get the nutrition you need,” says Veronica McLymont, PhD, RD, director of food and nutrition services at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Lack of Appetite

Eat smaller meals more frequently through the day than you do when you’re healthy. “We tend to eat with our eyes,” says Sarah Rafat, RD, senior dietitian at MD Anderson Cancer Center. “Sitting down to too big a meal can seem overwhelming if you don’t have much of an appetite.” Make a list of comfort foods that you love and have one or two on hand for when you feel like eating. Also keep nutritious snacks handy, such as nuts, carrot sticks, or yogurt.

Mouth Sores, Dry Mouth, or Trouble Swallowing

Avoid foods that require a lot of chewing. Puree or grind foods like meat and vegetables to make them easier to eat. Liquid foods such as soups and smoothies are also good options. “Real foods are always the best choice,” says Kim Jordan, RD, director of nutrition at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, part of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. “But if you’re having serious problems eating and swallowing, talk to your doctor about liquid meal replacements.” For dry mouth, try chewing gum or sucking on hard candies like lemon drops, which stimulates saliva production.

Nausea

Choose bland foods. Eat smaller meals more often during the day than you would when you are healthy. Eat slowly. Hard candy, peppermint, and ginger may ease nausea. If nausea persists, talk to your doctor. An anti-nausea medicine may help.

Fatigue

When you’re sick, you may feel too tired to make a meal. Stock up on prepared foods that you can easily pop in the microwave, such as frozen lasagna or pot pies. Keep nutritious snacks on hand such as nuts, sliced vegetables, hardboiled eggs, whole grain breakfast cereal, or yogurt. Eat your biggest meal at a time when you have the most energy.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common symptom and a side effect of some medicines. Eating soft, bland foods and avoiding greasy foods can help. Drink plenty of water or other fluids, since diarrhea can quickly dehydrate you. One way to replace electrolytes is to drink a sports beverage diluted with water.

Constipation

Opioid pain medicines and certain other treatments often cause constipation. To help prevent and treat constipation, eat foods high in fiber, such as apricots, prunes, applesauce, and whole grain breakfast cereals. Getting up and walking can also help get your digestive tract moving.

Unwanted Weight Loss

“If you’re losing weight when you shouldn’t, your top priority is taking in more calories,” says McLymont. Help yourself to foods you love, including high-calorie foods like milkshakes and desserts. Eat as often as you can throughout the day. Snack on high-energy foods such as nuts, seeds, cheese slices, and hardboiled eggs.

Unwanted Weight Gain

Some commonly used medicines can also make you gain unwanted weight. These include:

Alpha-blockers and Beta blockers for regulation of blood pressure
Anticonvulsants for epilepsy or other neurologic symptoms
Antidepressants, certain ones such as Elavil, Endep, (amitriptyline), Eskalith, Lithobid (lithium carbonate), and Zyprexa (olanzapine)
Insulin
Steroids like prednisone for arthritis and similar conditions

Falling Short on Nutrients

If you’re having real trouble eating a balanced diet, you may benefit from taking a vitamin and mineral supplement. Talk to your doctor or a dietitian before taking dietary supplements, especially if you take medicines for a serious health condition. Some supplements can impact the effectiveness of medicines.

Where Did Bristol Palin Get Money From?

Where Did Bristol Palin Get Money From?

Remember Bristol Palin?  Daughter of Sarah Palin from Alaska?  The one who was a teen mom?  The one… You get it.  LOL

Well, where did she get money from to have a house valued at over $500,000 on a swanky lake there in Alaska?????????

Look at this house she’s selling.

bri1 bri2 bri3 bri4 bri5 bri6 bri7 bri8 bri9

This is beautiful house in a wonderful area.  I know that it was renovated and everything but still she had to have paid over $300-$400,000 and with the renovations and the comps in the area, the price has gone up and maybe too because of who she is.

I don’t know.

What I do know is that Bristol is doing very well in life with that cuterful little boy.  She just got engaged too!!!  You go girl!!!!

The baby daddy got divorced a long time ago when she first hit the scene.  Now she has a new wonderful love with medal of honor recipient, Dakota Meyer.  Bristol is skinny minny too these days.

bristol2bristol3

Congrats Bristol and Dakota!  We wish you the best.

Disease Prevention: Get Healthy Lifestyle Tips and Ideas

Here are three reasons why following a healthy diet is important:

to maintain health by preventing loss of muscle strength, bone mass, and vitamin deficiency states;
to prevent diseases such as heart attacks, strokes, obesity, osteoporosis, and certain cancers; and
to help control and/or treat chronic diseases and conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, sleep apnea, and celiac disease.

Maintaining health

The body requires carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals to maintain healthy organs, bones, muscles, nerves, and to produce hormones and chemicals that are necessary for the proper function of organs.

Vitamins and minerals are naturally occurring substances that are essential for the growth and function of the body. Vitamins and minerals are both necessary (in small amounts) for normal chemical reactions (metabolism) in the body.

Preventing and controlling diseases

Obesity and heart attacks are major public-health problems in the United States and other countries. Therefore, most dietary recommendations are aimed at preventing these two diseases. Obesity comes over time by eating more calories than the body burns. Obesity, in turn, can be a cause of many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea, liver disease, arthritis, high blood pressure, gout, gallstones, and certain cancers.

To lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, it helps to eat more low-energy-dense foods. Low-energy-dense foods (such as vegetables and fruits) contain few calories per unit volume of food so that one can eat a large volume of it (for example, lettuce) without taking in many calories. One should also eat less of the high-energy-dense foods such as fats, egg yolks, fried foods, sweets, and high-fat salad dressings. Foods with a high energy density also often have high cholesterol and saturated fat content. One should also eat less of those foods that provide calories but little other nutrients, such as alcohol and many packaged snack foods.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, published in 2010 by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), contains guidelines for healthy diets based upon review of scientific studies for people above 2 years of age. These guidelines recommend that a healthy diet should:

balance calories with physical activity to manage weight;
consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood;
consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, and refined grains.

MyPyramid is an online animated program to help a person customize his/her diet by choosing proper foods and portion sizes based on the individual’s age, sex, and activity level. The key objectives of the MyPyramid Plan are to help a person get the most nutrition (proteins, vitamins, and minerals) out of the recommended number of daily calories and to achieve a balance between food intake and physical activity to maintain a healthy weight. The MyPyramid Plan recommendations include:

Make half your grains whole.
Vary your veggies.
Focus on fruit.
Get your calcium-rich foods.
Go lean with protein.
Find your balance between food and physical activity.

Doctor Caught On Camera

This picture was posted on Reddit.

doctor

It’s of a doctor in the parking lot with his head down, apparently going through something.

What you don’t know about this picture is that the doctor is grieving over losing a patient.

He was unable to save a 19 year-old and he couldn’t deal with the loss and broke down.

It’s a touching picture and it shows that human side we can sometimes forget some doctors have.

Some doctors just are so numb after so long they appear unsympathetic to our personal losses.

After he had his cry, he returned to the ER ready for the next patient.

Thank you to all of the healthcare workers that help us day in and day out!

The Wine You Drink May Have Arsenic In It

The Wine You Drink May Have Arsenic In It

You read that completely right.  I saw this story sitting in the Concentra Urgent Care Center this morning.

From what I saw on t.v., some of the wines sold at Trader Joe’s have arsenic in it.  However, when I read this article below, I found it involves wine companies like Franzia, Sutter Home, Glen Ellen, and Beringer!!!!!

I’m a wine drinker and I don’t care how much it costs I just like the taste and if it’s $2.99 from Citgo, so dayum be it!

Anywho, I may need to go and get a hair sample and see if I have arsenic in my body Lord.  From all my watching of Forensic Files, Dateline NBC, and 20/20 they say arsenic kills people.

Please make sure you read and do some research like me on these wines.

India Cheating Scandal

Ok!  This is a story hear especially after you see this picture.

Let’s look at the picture first.

india cheating scandal

This picture shows people scaling the walls of a building, right?  Sooooooooooooooo the story continues.

These are PARENTS of 10th GRADERS helping them CHEAT by climbing the walls of this school and passing them CHEAT SHEETS!!!!!

Due to this situation, over 600 students have been expelled!  To expel 600 students is a lot.

Apparently, this test is very challenging and means a lot for the children to pass.  Actually, the article says they have to pass this exam in order to continue on with their education.

My question is, where is the test proctor?????  In my school when we took any standardized tests, we had extra teachers in the classroom to watch us.  They dayum sure would’ve noticed my momma on a rope scaling down like a window cleaner passing me a cheat sheet.  LOL!

I mean, do they test via the honor system or something where the teachers go to the hookah lounge for a couple hours?  This is perplexing to me that no one saw all these crazy ass people climbing the walls like generic spider men and women.

Get it together people.  LOL

TV Actor Windell Dies at 36

TV Actor Windell Dies at 36

I was super sad about hearing about Windell Brooks passing away at 36 years young.  It’s so sad.

I really loved all the Miller High Life commercials he was in.  It made me want to drink beer and I hate beer with a passion.

I feel like someone from the family should call me and let me know what in the world happened.  They are still saying that the details around his death are still unknown and he died like a week and a half ago.

Somebody better let me know something soon.

R.I.P. Windell.  Miller High Life won’t be the same without you.  I mean the commercials.  I didn’t drink that mess in the first place.

Blake and Ryan Finally Tell Their Baby’s Name

Yahoo Celebrity just posted the article I’ve been waiting for, like millions of other Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds’ fans.

Via US Magazine, we can finally get off the edge of our seats to hear that precious, sweet, name of their beautiful creation.

And thee shall be called….. As Katt Williams would say, Wait for it………….

Butternut Summer Squash!  I’m kidding.  LOL.  That’s actually what Ryan said before he did the reveal for the magazine.

But the baby’s names Isssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

JAMES

YUP!  A little girl made from 2 stunning human beings has the given first name James, like a man that works in the back accounting office of Napa Auto Parts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why, Lord, why did they do this to that baby?  All of her little life she will be mistaken for a boy and questioned at every turn, bullied and made fun of.  Parents just don’t get it.  This creativity, if that’s what you wanna call it can be detrimental to the social life of a child, pre-teen, and teenager.  That’s why some people change their names later in life.

Because of ignorance like this, I agree with some countries making their people get approval for the name they pick for their baby.  It’s just going too far.  I thought Butternut Summer Squash was bad but James may be worse.

Good luck James.  When I got into middle school, I’d start pronouncing it Jame-ese or something cuter than James. Oooh, she can even pronounce it like a latina would Hi-mes.  That’s what I would do for real.  That sounds like couture.  People on the read carpet would say, “Girl who are you wearing?” I’d reply, “Hi-mes”.  LMAO!!!!!!
