Morning Inspiration

Morning Inspiration

Dred Scott was born in sometime around the turn of the century, often fixed at 1795, in Southampton County, Virginia. Legend has it that his name was Sam, but when his elder brother died, he adopted his name instead. His parents were slaves, but it is uncertain whether the Blow family owned them at his birth or thereafter. Peter Blow and his family relocated first to Huntsville, Alabama, and then to St. Louis Missouri. After Peter Blow’s death, in the early 1830s, Scott was sold to a U.S. Army doctor, John Emerson.

In 1836, Scott fell in love with a slave of another army doctor, 19-year-old Harriett Robinson, and her ownership was transferred over to Dr. Emerson when they were wed.

In the ensuing years, Dr. Emerson traveled to Illinois and the Wisconsin Territories, both of which prohibited slavery. When Emerson died in 1846, Scott tried to buy freedom for himself and his family from Emerson’s widow, but she refused.

Dred Scott made history by launching a legal battle to gain his freedom. That he had lived with Dr. Emerson in free territories become the basis for his case.

The process began in 1846: Scott lost in his initial suit in a local St. Louis district court, but he won in a second trial, only to have that decision overturned by the Missouri State Supreme Court. With support from local abolitionists, Scott filed another suit in federal court in 1854, against John Sanford, the widow Emerson’s brother and executor of his estate. When that case was decided in favor of Sanford, that Scott turned to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In December 1856, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech, foreshadowing the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, examining the constitutional implications of the Dred Scott Case.

On March 6, 1857, the Supreme Court decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford was issued, 11 long years after the initial suits. Seven of the nine judges agreed with the outcome delivered by Chief Justice Roger Taney, who announced that slaves were not citizens of the United States and therefore had no rights to sue in Federal courts: “… They had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.”

The decision also declared that the Missouri Compromise (which had allowed Scott to sample freedom in Illinois and Wisconsin) was unconstitutional, and that Congress did not have the authority to prohibit slavery.

The Dred Scott decision sparked outrage in the northern states and glee in the south—the growing schism made civil war inevitable.

Too controversial to retain the Scotts as slaves after the trial, Mrs. Emerson remarried and returned Dred Scott and his family to the Blows who granted them their freedom in May 1857. That same month, Frederick Douglass delivered a speech discussing the Dred Scott decision on the anniversary of the American Abolition Society.

Eventually, the 13th and 14th amendments to the Constitution overrode this Supreme Court ruling.

Dred Scott and his family stayed in St. Louis after his emancipation, and he found work as a porter in a local hotel. But after only a little more than a year of true freedom, Scott died from tuberculosis on September 17, 1858.

Dred Scott is buried in the Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis (Harriet survived him by 18 years and is buried in Hillsdale, Missouri). Putting pennies (displaying the face of President Lincoln) on Scott’s headstone has become a local tradition over the decades. The commemorative marker next to the headstone reads: “In Memory Of A Simple Man Who Wanted To Be Free.”

In 1997, Dred Scott and his wife Harriet were admitted to the St. Louis Walk of Fame.

If You See Punxsutawney Phil, Turn Him In!!!!!

If You See Punxsutawney Phil, Turn Him In!!!!!

Another great laugh for the day!

The New Hampshire police are actively searching for the Punxsutawney groundhog after he failed to inform the state that there would be mountains of snow everywhere!!

I thought he would be under arrest for biting the mayor, that would be assault of a public official to say the least.  LOL

Look at the picture carefully.  If see any hair on his little, peanut head, call the authorities.  Don’t approach him though, he might bring snow to your area!  LOL

Penguins in Sweaters

Penguins in Sweaters

This is the cutest thing I have seen all day besides my kids.  LOL

An elderly man, 109 years young, spends his time knitting adorable sweaters for penguins.

You heard me, penguins.  The same penguins that spend time in the cold weather.  The same cold weather that God made their skin for.  I’m just saying.  LOL

It’s a sweet gesture but I’m sure those penguins were like, “did someone turn the heat on?”.

What’s next, fuzzy socks for polar bears?  Their toe nails would scratch through those socks.  LMAO

Powerball Jackpot is $500 Million

Powerball Jackpot is $500 Million

The Powerball jackpot is like $500 million dollars right now.  People are still in lines buying tickets for that once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to be a millionaire.  I bought mine so wish me luck.

Hmmmmm, let me think what I would do if I won that $500 million.

1.  Wake up early and change my name to my new alias…Strunk Flukket South Carolina University (from Key and Peele superbowl edition)

2.  Go down to the lottery office and get my check in my new alias.

3.  Put on some pajamas with a headscarf and slippers to go to the Cadillac dealership to get a fleet of cars for me and my mom.

4.  Go up to my old job in my pajamas and slippers and quit, then push over a plant or 2 in the lobby.  LOL

5.  Before I leave my job, sprinkle ones over the heads of some of my old hating ass co-workers to show them they should’ve been nicer to me.

6.  Ooh, then put decaf in the coffee machine for them old haters too.

7.  Find Candice Olson’s phone number to furnish every room in my new family subdivision that I’ll buy on the way to Starbucks.  (If you don’t know Candice Olson, look her up!)

8.  Have David Tutera fly out to Atlanta to throw a party where I invite all the people I know and give them gift cards with $10,000 on it.

9.  Start my non-profit organization called “You Need Me, I’m There” and help as many people with various issues as I can.

10.  On Sunday, pre-pay 5 years of tithes then pay off the church Building Fund…… FINALLY!  No more fish fries for me!

Those are just a few of the things I would do.  That amount of money can be a gift and a curse at the same time I’m sure.  I’ve seen a lot of the specials about how the lottery changed my life and the majority of the people say they wish they never won.  They a lie!  I can’t wait to win to do as much for people as I can.   I would literally go and buy up some Hondas and just stand on the corner at the bus stop in Birmingham giving out keys. It will be my job to figure out how to give more of my money to people.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Black History Tribute from John Legend and Common

This is a wonderfully crafted song which marries old soul with hip-hop mixed with a powerful message.

I love the line, “now the war isn’t over and victory isn’t won”.  This is so true, America has a lot more work to do.

What’s Your Jam Wednesday

Hey Cocoa Drops, it’s time to tell us what you’ve been jammin to this week.

I find myself loving the new Usher song, “I Don’t Mind”.  I’ve been riding to Usher for years and I just love his sound and how he dances.  More people need to dance!  Pole dance too.  I chose this YouTube video to showcase the song and for you to see regular women pole dancing.  They are dancing to Usher’s song featuring Juicy J.

What’s yours jam?

Well Phee, I’ve loved this song since I 1st heard it. It’s from the Freak Like Me album by Adina Howard. It really showcases her vocal range. The lyrics are dope too because they are both telling each other that I have your back. Love that! Enjoy!

Less Than Swan Lake

Less Than Swan Lake

First let me start by saying, Bwahahahahahahahaha!

Whoever saw such a thing?

This poor swan was sleeping on or near the water and his bill was frozen shut.  Shouldn’t he be dead?

This is probably ol talking ass Tyrone Swan who always has something to say about someone or something or telling lies.  He swear he always got the new swan phone or swan Js but we never see it.  He’s always gossiping and being mean around the lake and stealing.  I bet all the other swans were like, no better for Tyrone, GOD Swan don’t like ugly.  Lmao!

When a good song is sampled…Mary Jane Girls “All Night Long”

Driving to my eye appointment today,  I heard that familiar beat drop; All Night Long by Mary Jane Girls and had to wait to see which artist would come on. To my surprise it was a good one, Smooth Operator by Big Daddy Kane. Of course, I heard it on that hot OG 97.9 Hip Hop radio station. When I looked into how many songs have sampled this one beat there were over 80 songs. Wow! You know, it has to be an awesome song to have so many artists sample it. Remember these are the same women who sang In My House. Those soprano harmonies are THE BOMB!!

Two of my all time favorites is Tell Me by Groove Theory and the queen Mary J. Blige’s cover. Here is the link if you want to check out that list – http://www.whosampled.com/Mary-Jane-Girls/All-Night-Long/sampled/

Turn your speakers up!!! For your listening pleasure here are the fabulous Mary Jane Girls:
