What’s Your Jam Wednesday?

I’m back with my jam for Wednesday!

This one comes from my girl Sevyn Streeter and Chris Brown called “Don’t Kill The Fun”.  I think they make a really good song couple.

It just gets me groove when it comes on and I feel like dancing a little bit while I’m sitting in my car in traffic.

Enjoy!

I love me some old school hip hop. This just so happens to be one of my favorites. When I’m listening to Bonita Applebum by A Tribe Called Quest, I then have to play Slick Rick’s, A Teenage Love and LL Cool J’s, I Need Love. Each of these artists knew the right words to say to make a girl swoon. They were also great lyricists and told great stories. I miss hip hop like that. The Roots, Nas, Dilated Peoples, Wale, and Kendrick Lamar fit in with them perfectly. Anywho, enjoy my jam, Bonita Applebum!

Oscar Emotional Moment

Oscar Emotional Moment

Last night, Common and John Legend and their government names Lonnie Lynn Jr. and John Stephens won their 1st Oscar for the original song, Glory for the movie Selma. As is typical, all of the original songs were performed live. The performance of Glory was stellar. It was so beautifully crafted. Very minimal theatrics, just great music. There were a sea of marchers on the stage and the ending was an acapella masterpiece. It was so compelling that it left some audience members in tears and resulted in an extended standing ovation.

Check out the performance and acceptance speeches below.

Enjoy!

Pieces by Tamar Braxton

Pieces by Tamar Braxton

Since I missed this Wednesdays Jam, I decided to sprinkle a little music happiness on you with one of my favs from my girl Tamar Braxton.

Whoever said that music wasn’t made from truth was a lie.  Most of the songs written were from someone’s experience.  I think a lot of us can relate to what Tamar’s singing about in this song.  Don’t take pieces of someone Cocoa Drops, demand the whole dayum thing cause you deserve it!!!!!!!!!!

Teyana Taylor

Teyana Taylor

Omgoodness!  I don’t know about you but I have been dying to see what all the hype is about Teyana Taylor.  Don’t get me wrong, she is adorbs, with a lil body to kill for, but I first heard of her back in the day when they premiered her party on Super Sweet 16 on MTV.  It was a lavish, gritty themed party for teensters and a complete success.

After that I would see pics of her with all kinds of celebrities but no music.  Modeling pics here and there but no music.  She was in the Madea Big Happy Family movie but still no music for real.  Oh, wait, she did have one song, “Google Me” or something like that but it came and went.

Finally, the clouds opened and an album fell out.  I am really digging lil Miss Teyana.  She has some great song ideas/writing and I like the deep, raspy vocals she’s belting.

You go Teyana, keep getting your money hunny!

Check out these favs of mine from her album VII.

Black History Tribute from John Legend and Common

This is a wonderfully crafted song which marries old soul with hip-hop mixed with a powerful message.

I love the line, “now the war isn’t over and victory isn’t won”.  This is so true, America has a lot more work to do.

What’s Your Jam Wednesday

Hey Cocoa Drops, it’s time to tell us what you’ve been jammin to this week.

I find myself loving the new Usher song, “I Don’t Mind”.  I’ve been riding to Usher for years and I just love his sound and how he dances.  More people need to dance!  Pole dance too.  I chose this YouTube video to showcase the song and for you to see regular women pole dancing.  They are dancing to Usher’s song featuring Juicy J.

What’s yours jam?

Well Phee, I’ve loved this song since I 1st heard it. It’s from the Freak Like Me album by Adina Howard. It really showcases her vocal range. The lyrics are dope too because they are both telling each other that I have your back. Love that! Enjoy!

When a good song is sampled…Mary Jane Girls “All Night Long”

Driving to my eye appointment today,  I heard that familiar beat drop; All Night Long by Mary Jane Girls and had to wait to see which artist would come on. To my surprise it was a good one, Smooth Operator by Big Daddy Kane. Of course, I heard it on that hot OG 97.9 Hip Hop radio station. When I looked into how many songs have sampled this one beat there were over 80 songs. Wow! You know, it has to be an awesome song to have so many artists sample it. Remember these are the same women who sang In My House. Those soprano harmonies are THE BOMB!!

Two of my all time favorites is Tell Me by Groove Theory and the queen Mary J. Blige’s cover. Here is the link if you want to check out that list – http://www.whosampled.com/Mary-Jane-Girls/All-Night-Long/sampled/

Turn your speakers up!!! For your listening pleasure here are the fabulous Mary Jane Girls:

Who Butchers Take My Hand, Precious Lord?

Who Butchers Take My Hand, Precious Lord?

I know there was a lot of controversy about Beyoncé singing Take My Hand, Precious Lord by Mahalia Jackson over Ledisi at the Grammys. After tonight, I hope people realize that those opppsing were right. I’ve never heard anyone butcher that song so badly. Why did she even ask to do the song? Why did John Legend and Common agree to that mess. The loyalty to the singer who portrayed the artist in Selma was completely gone. John Legend even said, you don’t say no to Beyoncé. Yes, you do. Just use phonetics while you put the N and the O together. Anywho, that’s my soapbox. I found these on YouTube.

Beyoncé’s version:

Ledisi’s version:

I feel that I saved the best for last. Your thought?

Watch “Rufus & Chaka Khan – Ain’t Nobody” on YouTube

Sometimes a song can come on the radio that makes you raise your hands in the air, snap your fingers and sway from side to side. For me, this is one of those jams. Sang Chaka!!
