The Mexican holiday recognizes when the Mexican Army defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 — a major win considering Mexico was the underdog, outnumbered 6,040 to 4,500 against France (who hadn’t lost in 50 years). If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Mexican culture this weekend, it doesn’t matter what your relationship status is on the holiday. Remember the old days when you would make a mix tape of favorite songs for your high school girlfriend? Even though that technology is dated, you can conjure the same effect with an iPod, iTunes and some blank CDs (if you’re still using those).
Get out your laptops and iPods and make playlists for each other. Then, next time your date is driving along or at the gym, she won’t be able to get you off her mind.
Get adventurous in the kitchen and try making something new together. Find something you’ve never tried cooking before. Think of a new cuisine; perhaps the two of you could try a Thai green curry, and make your own curry paste too. Or, you could try your hand at baking a decadent cake from scratch — or even a sheet of cookies. Turn up the music and bustle around the kitchen together, then settle in with a bottle of wine to enjoy your spoils once you’re done.
